Sound And Stable Mind

History has shown repeatedly that large scale movement of people from one region to the other is a phenomenon that can never really be stopped permanently. We have the same instincts as other creatures. Birds fly for thousands of miles in flocks each year looking for a climate that suits their particular seasonal needs. The same happens with animals inhabiting the deep seas and the ocean. However, the after effects are quite different with humans as we are exceptional to all other species created by God. For God created man in His own image giving him the freedom to choose through processing of information.

Currently, there is a massive and rapid movement of migrant workers happening all around the globe. Human reaction to the Covid-19 has escalated. We are petrified if we suddenly have a runny nose or an itchy throat these days though! The pendulum is surely swinging in two extreme ends! We are in panic mode as we are much more sensitive to all other living creatures. Whether right or wrong, over 80% of those in the business world will also think along the same lines – extreme fear of the highly contagious virus and its almost certain death warrant! The reaction in the business world is almost same world wide – let’s shut down and send the workers back home.

This mass reaction to the pandemic raging around the globe has brought all of us worldwide on the same highway of fright and flight mode. This is the panic mode in which any living creature gets into. The mere thought makes us take deep, quick and shallow breaths. Our mind is locked into nothing but about the pandemic.

When I was trying to swim in Puri, in Orissa which has one of the busiest beaches in India we were told to assess the approaching waves. If the waves were small in our perception we must jump and ride over the waves. If the waves were huge and we felt overwhelmed as they approached us, we were to stand very still and duck right under allowing the waves to go over us. As a young girl it all seemed great fun! There was absolutely no fear or doubt that I would not be able to tackle these two scenarios. We of course had very experienced swimmers and divers there to assist us and we relied on their experience. We also learnt to follow their instructions minutely and carry them out. Fun and enjoyment replaced fear and doubt! There was absolutely no talk of failure at all!

Human beings have the ability to filter their thoughts and thought processes. Our mental faculties have the ability to process information using them! There are six types of faculties to be exercised and developed in the human mind according to my teacher Bob Proctor (www.proctorgallagherinstitute.com); they are perception, will, imagination, intuition, memory and reason. Every human being has been born with these faculties. The question is were we raised to be winners or losers! Every displaced migrant worker will be exercising these six faculties but they will be exercising them in their own paradigm bringing about different results!

The Bible is very clear about how we should take care of our minds in several verses. For it encourages us to be sober and calm in our minds so we don’t react but respond giving due consideration to any problem that comes our way and requires a solution or resolution. 2 Timothy 1:7 For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

May we continue to trust in the higher powers – whoever we believe in. The Bible also says that God’s love for us is eternal and unwavering. We have to make sure our spirits do not waver during this time of crises but let this adversity be a catalyst for us to grow deeper in our faith in the Almighty God. May His PEACE be a common ground which will run through our lives bringing lasting peace in all mankind.

I want to finish today with a quote from the Bible hoping that whoever comes across my blog is blessed doubly :-

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

I think my grandfather and father were wise in the area of shaping their children’s minds in that they used to control what radio stations we could tune into. They protected our home environment to build a common character and fortitude in us. It is absolutely necessary that we go back to some of the time tested old rituals and habits and not give into mass panic and self sabotage.
