Gratitude

Gratitude is one of the higher human faculties and it is beyond our immediate five senses – see, smell, taste, hear and touch with which we are born. Many cultures around the world did not practice gratitude in the sense the western world understands and expresses. That is not to say that other cultures and civilisations did not have the concept of gratitude in their everyday living practices. In the Indian Subcontinent we do find direct translation of the phrase ‘Thank you!’; however, they are expressed and applied in different contexts. In Urdu Shukriya and in Sanskritised form it is expressed as Dhanyabad (Bengali/Hindi). ‘Shukriya’ was expressed much elaborately in the courts of Muslim kings and nobles in India prior to the arrival of the British with often a ceremony of giving gifts and bowing down to those in authority to express gratitude. In Bengali which is my mother tongue, it was used in sarcasm if at all. Dhanyabad was expressed in a huff to convey, “Thank you! But no Thank you!” (Ugh!). Culturally speaking gratitude was expressed in everyday living mainly through acts of kindness in return for some benefits received.

My Personal Gratitude Story

As a child, when I started attending a Convent School in India, I was transported to another world, whenever I arrived at the grounds of the school; as it was an entirely different world in those days in which parents sent their children for various reasons.

This convent school was my very first school and what caught my attention almost instantaneously was the way, “Thank You” was being spoken quite often by the Irish nuns throughout the day. It was a new concept and it fascinated my young mind to no end. I noticed the spontaneous smile, the forward tilt of the head and the deep breath one took while letting out that phrase. Everyday common activities were transported to something quite out of this world around this phrase. What was an exclusive expression in bygone days and found only among the elite was being introduced in the everyday lives of those for value and for the well being of all; so it seemed to my young mind! What I noticed was that the other party also reciprocated with a great smile on receiving the favour. I even noticed some younger nuns curtsying to the head of the institution. It meant that I was also expected to learn this and master it to become part and parcel of my own identity! This was a matter of great contemplation in my young and very impressionable mind in those days and I toyed with this idea for days as this was all very alien to me.

As I got dropped off each day to my new school which was simply miles away from home through the car pool which my father and his colleagues organised, my heart would start beating in anticipation of all that would be awaiting for me to learn and grasp on that day. I would take note of the big manicured lawn at the front with flower beds being tended by gardeners and would draw a deep breath as I would step out of the car with others in the car pool.

The smell of ripe mulberries and star fruit always seemed to attract my senses and I would feel a sudden burst of energy while walking across to my classroom. There were old large fruit bearing trees behind the main building and what a joy it was to walk past them! It reminded me of my grandfather’s fruit trees back home!

I would be filled with the joy of freedom in my being and a sense of huge gladness would envelop me. I would pick up the ripe juicy mulberries from the ground with my classmates not feeling any guilt and we practised our “thank you” with one another as we shared our hand-picked fruit in our little palms, practising our “Thank you!” with one another as we shared with one another. Looking back I realise we were being indoctrinated into a new culture which filled me with all kinds of feelings of excitement and anticipation – Oh my God! What next!

What made me different to most other children was I always wanted to try out and act upon what I learnt. So it was not unusual for me to get into trouble in a society where we were meant to be just seen and almost never heard!

You really have to hold your breath for what comes next!

One fine afternoon as I was getting dropped off by a doctor friend of my father’s, I suddenly opened my mouth and said, “Thank you!” to him. The car stopped outside our home in the doctors’ colony where we lived and he got out of the car to open the boot of the car as there were no remote opening device back then in the sixties! This gentleman whom I called Uncle, pulled open the boot cover, picked up my school bag and gave it to me. I said, “Thank you, Uncle!” He looked at me strangely, and said, “What did you say?”. Already very nervous, I looked down at the ground and said very slowly, “Thank you!” my voice dropping to a mere whisper but loud enough for him to catch the words that came out of my mouth. He let out a loud guffaw and chuckling loudly he jumped into the driver’s seat and slammed his door. I next saw him leaning across to his wife and saying something close to his wife’s ears. He then sped off in a cloud of smoke while I stood there feeling guilty and ashamed; worse still I did not know then what I had done wrong. I knew for sure that I had overstepped the mark! I did feel then at that moment for sure the vast void between what I learnt at that school and the world that I lived in. I sighed with sadness and I slowly lifted the latch of our garden gate with my head hung low in shame.

“Thank you!” an expression of gratitude to my mind was good and worth cultivating; even a must in order to be educated. This was drilled by those dear nuns who I remember to this day. In fact it was more important to understand the significance of expressed gratitude and apply it daily on every occasion whenever possible, than getting good grades for our knowledge of our class curriculum in our primary school years. The understanding of this concept went deep in our hearts and transformed our entire beings as we grew up in that educational environment. It also slowly and surely separated me from the rest of my family for sure for I took learning and application too seriously.

Now this Uncle of mine whom I mentioned above was a UK returned and qualified doctor as my father was. Not only that, he had lived in the UK for many years where he and his wife raised their young family. They had already become talk of the town for their westernised ways and gossip was going around that they were even into ballroom dancing. This was in the early sixties in a small town in Bihar! There was more to come my way….

Dinner table conversations at home could be very uncomfortable as it was generally one way conversations in which my Dad was in charge. The next night I saw my father looking quizzically at me across the dinner table. My back stiffened in fear and anticipation of what was coming across me. I felt I had become half the size and I had an urge to disappear under the table. Finally my father broke the uneasy silence and informed me that I had become the talk of his entire department of academics. He informed that all his colleagues were discussing me and laughing at my behaviour because I had said, “Thank you!” to an older person. I had dared to open my mouth to speak to an adult! My father shook his head in despair at me and then silently started eating his dinner. My mother sitting next to him obviously had been informed about this terrible incident which took place outside right in front of our house. Thank goodness there was nobody else around!

Gratitude is an alien concept among Bengalis and several other Indians I have encountered. But there is much more to gratitude than one can ever imagine. Practicing Gratitude changes one’s world and makes it much more worth living. It takes us beyond what our educational achievements or careers can give us if we are desiring peace and happiness in our lives. As years rolled by I never ever said “thank you” to any other Bengali friends or relatives but I believe my body language couldn’t help but exude this deep feeling that was instilled into my heart by my educational environment.

Gratitude or thankfulness is worth pursuing – we can keep pursuing it without stopping and it is sure to open an entirely new world in us. For this I am grateful to my current teacher Bob Proctor. In order to listen further on this topic I would encourage my readers to open the following link and read on gratitude: https://www.proctorgallagherinstitute.com/6207/how-an-attitude-of-gratitude-changes-everything

May God bless us all!

Sound And Stable Mind

History has shown repeatedly that large scale movement of people from one region to the other is a phenomenon that can never really be stopped permanently. We have the same instincts as other creatures. Birds fly for thousands of miles in flocks each year looking for a climate that suits their particular seasonal needs. The same happens with animals inhabiting the deep seas and the ocean. However, the after effects are quite different with humans as we are exceptional to all other species created by God. For God created man in His own image giving him the freedom to choose through processing of information.

Currently, there is a massive and rapid movement of migrant workers happening all around the globe. Human reaction to the Covid-19 has escalated. We are petrified if we suddenly have a runny nose or an itchy throat these days though! The pendulum is surely swinging in two extreme ends! We are in panic mode as we are much more sensitive to all other living creatures. Whether right or wrong, over 80% of those in the business world will also think along the same lines – extreme fear of the highly contagious virus and its almost certain death warrant! The reaction in the business world is almost same world wide – let’s shut down and send the workers back home.

This mass reaction to the pandemic raging around the globe has brought all of us worldwide on the same highway of fright and flight mode. This is the panic mode in which any living creature gets into. The mere thought makes us take deep, quick and shallow breaths. Our mind is locked into nothing but about the pandemic.

When I was trying to swim in Puri, in Orissa which has one of the busiest beaches in India we were told to assess the approaching waves. If the waves were small in our perception we must jump and ride over the waves. If the waves were huge and we felt overwhelmed as they approached us, we were to stand very still and duck right under allowing the waves to go over us. As a young girl it all seemed great fun! There was absolutely no fear or doubt that I would not be able to tackle these two scenarios. We of course had very experienced swimmers and divers there to assist us and we relied on their experience. We also learnt to follow their instructions minutely and carry them out. Fun and enjoyment replaced fear and doubt! There was absolutely no talk of failure at all!

Human beings have the ability to filter their thoughts and thought processes. Our mental faculties have the ability to process information using them! There are six types of faculties to be exercised and developed in the human mind according to my teacher Bob Proctor (www.proctorgallagherinstitute.com); they are perception, will, imagination, intuition, memory and reason. Every human being has been born with these faculties. The question is were we raised to be winners or losers! Every displaced migrant worker will be exercising these six faculties but they will be exercising them in their own paradigm bringing about different results!

The Bible is very clear about how we should take care of our minds in several verses. For it encourages us to be sober and calm in our minds so we don’t react but respond giving due consideration to any problem that comes our way and requires a solution or resolution. 2 Timothy 1:7 For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

May we continue to trust in the higher powers – whoever we believe in. The Bible also says that God’s love for us is eternal and unwavering. We have to make sure our spirits do not waver during this time of crises but let this adversity be a catalyst for us to grow deeper in our faith in the Almighty God. May His PEACE be a common ground which will run through our lives bringing lasting peace in all mankind.

I want to finish today with a quote from the Bible hoping that whoever comes across my blog is blessed doubly :-

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

I think my grandfather and father were wise in the area of shaping their children’s minds in that they used to control what radio stations we could tune into. They protected our home environment to build a common character and fortitude in us. It is absolutely necessary that we go back to some of the time tested old rituals and habits and not give into mass panic and self sabotage.

An Open Letter to Our PM – May 2020 – In midst of Covid-19

Dear Respected PM Modi, today is Mothers’ Day and my son ordered some lunch for me to enjoy but I could hardly have this lunch as my heart has been laden as I read about the inter state workers going back to their homes in different parts of the country empty handed. In the following paragraphs I am going to write about two types of workers. I believe if you take note of my response to these two types of workers you will be surprised positively what I have to write. So though I am an ordinary everyday person I humbly appeal to you to take time to read and process the following significantly ground breaking insights related to Indian Workers :

1) There are now thousands of overseas workers returning home specially from the Middle East as there contracts are disrupted due to Covid-19. We have to remember these workers who were self-centred all their lives. They had good living but did not contribute materially or sharing their advanced skills in their motherland. This is “Wikruti” of Human “Prakruti” which you discussed in your last Man Ki Baat lectures. When we look at other countries specially other Asian countries overseas students are yearning to go back to their countries to a large extent to contribute their newly acquired knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for the transformation of their home economy. They zealously start businesses and a have a great desire to create their own supportive and vibrant community where all work together with joy and mutual support and bonding based on their common historic past. Only India has so far been a exception – exception to the Universal Human nature. Worst still, these so called Indian migrants are extremely proud and do not hesitate to attack or destroy another fellow Indian’s life or livelihood.

2) Now let us look at the workers, the daily wage earners and labourers who are going through extraordinary suffering simply because we are not responding according to the natural laws in the right way. Our God the Creator of the entire universe and His love with profound mercy is for all. Hence we have to walk and take actions with this unshakeable faith. If our problem is unique our solution is also unique and requires unique way of solving the problem, The answer is already out there in the Universe. Now respected PM you had already made a decision that India will march forward with economic growth and social transformation as part of your dream. So we have embarked on that road. Road blocks in the form of Covid-19 has arrived – we have to take it as a blessing in disguise and we have to use our mental faculties with care and decisiveness. Work must continue in India full speed – only changes have to be made in work place practices….As an e.g. workers must wear clean clothing. Ladies must not wear saris at work but salwar or some loose pajamas. Deep breathing exercises should be undertaken by workers with regular drinking of water every hour or so. For every hour of work there should be 5 minutes of stretching exercises. No spitting by workers. Less carbohydrate intake and more green vegetables and some fruit. ALL LOCAL WORKERS MUST RETURN TO WORK! Foreign returned workers who are positive in their outlook with advanced skills should be given opportunities to work and contribute to building up YOUR DREAM SIR OF NEW INDIA! Jai HInd!

Come Who Are Heavy Laden – God Loves You!

God wants us to be saved and gain an eternal life. The experience is amazing when such an event occurs in one’s life.

We have all Sinned
We are all born of sin and carry with us a sinful nature. Knowingly or unknowingly we all sin which separates us from God. This separates us from experiencing the glory and grace of God. Romans 3:23-24 : 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. So the sin can be overturned through reaching out to Jesus through whose grace we start learning to live a life cleansed of sin.

The wage of Sin is death

Romans 6: 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord.

After Death is Judgement

Most people are aware that there is a Heaven where we go after we die and also that we have to face judgement. None of us will pass when we face this judgement as we have all fallen short of our Father’s standards of goodness. It is only through His Son that we can enter the gates of Heaven and gain an everlasting life.

Hebrews 9:27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

After The Judgement Comes The Sentence

Revelation 20:15
In this world itself God’s salvation is available to all of us only if we are willing to accept the Father in Heaven and believe that He sent His son Jesus to die for our sins so we can have an everlasting life in Heaven. When we do this our names are written in the Book of Life.

15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

EDUCATION FOR LIFE TRANSFORMATION AND REGENERATION

The matter of universal education has weighed heavily on my heart. My own grandfather from my father’s side was well known for brahmanical teachings which he applied while raising his sons to become well rounded individuals. He was a poor priest who through hard discipline, well structured education, eating  healthy diet and regular sporting activities raised six boys who all went to do very well in their lives. That is what Educations is about. Well grounded education related to lives of individuals has the power to shape lives and transform societies.  However, this essential outcome of Education got completely lost once the region gained independence from colonialism.

Catholic Education System has done well throughout the Indian Subcontinent and even in Pakistan it is highly acknowledged by the wealthy Muslims. However, when we look at Protestant Evangelical movement it has miserably failed in the area of educating its members. It is one of the reasons for persistent poverty of the vast majority Christians.

The entire subcontinent believes that the only reason we get educated is to get a job and have little understanding of the life transforming work of Education that starts from the moment a baby is born. There are only a few Protestant schools which have done well in India. Don Bosco and Assembly of God are well regarded in Kolkata which is the capital city of my state. But apart from a handful of these most Christians are perceived by others suffering from persistent poverty. However, in reality the true gospel blesses people in every area of their lives enabling one to enjoy the joy of Salvation in this life itself.

Secondly, India together with other countries in the region has failed miserably in putting together a primary school curriculum which assigns the school system to raise citizens of tomorrow. Unless this is done our children will always suffer.

I was once invited to speak and participate in All India School Principals meet in New Delhi organized by NCERT(National Council of Education Research and Training)  where I discovered that in spite of all the research work undertaken by the educational board it has never really considered the urgency of  formulating at ground level  a common picture of what a child should be able to perform for success in daily living. They have come up with the curriculum; which is mapping out what children should learn in maths, languages, science and social sciences though. However, these too are very stagnant for lack of ongoing research on various ways of implementing in the classroom. What this curriculum lacks is the Hidden Curriculum which is most essential. It fails to touch on the subject of learning outcomes – which is, what should our children become as individuals once they complete their primary school years? What qualities should our children have in a democratic country to shoulder the responsibility of living in a free society?

As believers we have a great part to play. This is where the teachings of our Lord Jesus come into huge play. Our Lord was an amazing teacher and his teaching methodology can never go outdated. I was most privileged to train teachers in various parts of India on teaching methodology taken out of the New Testament and imparting in various Christian and non Christian schools. This was extraordinarily empowering for the whole school community. This was the very framework for whole community transformation. I saw the spark and I continue to pray that the Lord will use me to share those teaching/learning principles to ignite the fire for social and lifelong transformation once he allows the season to blossom in my life once again.

As Christians it is imperative that all saints in our congregation are literate and are positive about reading the Bible in order to apply in their daily lives. As we can see relying on one pastor does not raise a vibrant church or a vibrant community. One of the tools of reviving our churches is to educate each and every person in our church so that they become fully functioning members in the Body.

THE GOOD NEWS TRANSFORMS OUR LIVES AND WE ARE NEVER POOR AS WE BECOME SPIRITUALLY ENRICHED

Jesus our Everlasting Lord

I have been thinking of Palm Sunday today being the very day today as never before. Jesus appeared on this day openly in Jerusalem in all his glory and power.  His humility was revealed in his choosing a donkey and a colt to ride into the town to meet the very ordinary and common people who came out in huge crowds to see him for he gave hope to those who needed hope. For his heart was with the multitude.

The above incident is in stark contrast to his time of returning to reign the world for thousand years when his arrival will be resplendent in much greater glory as he will arrive with a thousand select to judge and reign in righteousness . Revelation 17:14 “They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings–and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.”

Palm Sunday is the day today in which I feel that he has captured my heart and will emanate all around me wherever I go.  He arrived in the city of Jerusalem and he will arrive in every city, town, village and suburb in the entire world before his final arrival through transforming hearts and making them holy and full of love.  He is powerful, majestic and everlasting.  He is a our very hope and our very life for he is in all and all in all. Colossians 1:17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

More Honorable

1 Chronicles 4:10
9Jabez was more honourable than his brothers, and his mother named him Jabez saying, “Because I bore him with pain.” 10Now Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!” And God granted him what he requested.

I think verse 9 can be read as a subjective statement and interpreted as the view point of the age as perceived by Ezra the writer of the Books of Chronicles. However, the way I see this statement is that even at a very early stage of one’s life one can see some traits that distinguishes one child from another even in the same family. What Ezra was saying was that Jabez had some qualities which made him remarkable even though the circumstances of his birth were not very pleasant for his mother.

A lesson that we might learn from this very much quoted verse is that God is happy when we ask for greater responsibilities and willing to serve Him. There is no promise to say that life would be a bed of roses when we follow our God but it certainly ensures that we live as His children on this Earth even when our physical circumstances suggest otherwise.

In fact Jabez carried a name which was always a reminder that he had given pain to his mother at birth. We do not know much about this character and other life events but what we know is that he was a man of prayer and a man of great faith despite his humble circumstance. We can also assume that he felt free to approach His Father in the throne room without any hesitation and saw himself positioned to pray and take authority over a large area while seeking peace and safety in the bosom of His Father.

God granted Jabez his request because He found him capable of taking on the responsibility over what he asked and extended his sphere of influence.

Spiritual Transformation-Basis of Outward Transformation to Connect with Divine Plan and Purpose

Romans 8:28-30 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

Not all are called by God to be His children.  Only a few unfortunately through some suffering in life ultimately come to a point where they feel totally hedged in from all directions not knowing where to go and what to do.  Often people meet Jesus miraculously when they want to commit suicide.  I have met one pastor with a large ministry who was saved when a pamphlet containing the Good News flew across him in the breeze in a park and he gave himself to Jesus turning away completely from Islamic  teachings overnight.  There is always a purpose why He calls us and what He wants to do with us after that and how He wants us to co-operate with Him; as these things are not always clear instantaneously.  But certainly God being Spirit wants us to meet Him at a spiritual level and not on the level of our fleshly thinking which comes from the teachings of the world with its fair share of successes and failures.  Hence it is not about our successes and failures from the worldly sense but a matter of drawing ourselves closer and closer to Him day by day and morning by morning as we worship Him in Divine truth.

Our very birth to our ultimate death has been preplanned by God.  No satan’s interference can snatch the number of days counted out for each one of us by God.  Hence as a Born Again it is best to fall into His plans and purpose – the most fundamental being becoming like his son each day.  It is a process and it cannot be achieved in one day.  It is for one of these reasons that He sent His Son to dwell on Earth among ordinary human beings as the first born from whom others could also gain sonship.  So Jesus is our prototype for ALL believers across the world.  The only way we can know Jesus is to exchange our old selves to the Lord’s self and also renewing our minds from time to time when the worldly dross is bound to catch up on us.

So we the Born Again children of God were predestined to belong to this sonship.  But this is not a cheap purchase for we received this sonship not out of anything good we have in us but only through His grace and mercy.  Even when saved we must realise our hopeless condition and be ever thirsty for the Word of God – Rhema- to work in us and through us through our active participation.  We need the blessing of the Spirit to work quickly through us to transform us so we can be shining examples in our daily living.  Such a living will be a testimony to a world which is dead to sins in all forms and satan has found numerous means of deceiving the human mind at every level.

Many of us will be glorified even in this world while serving Him and all will be glorified in our eternal abode in Heaven.  However, it is not for us to glorify ourselves but to allow the Lord to glorify us.  We have to remember this God who is the Creator of everything was born in an ordinary stable, worked as a carpenter, lived humbly and yet could have been the richest and most powerful man on Earth. Because he humbled himself his Father gave him the highest position so that in his name every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Savior (Phillipians2:10)

He has anointed our feet yet again!

I am led to post this blog as Mark Mukherjee and I are leaving for Pakistan and India we believe in His perfect will.  We are delighted that we will be praying for a Women’s ministry, be part of fellowship and evangelism of a large church and fellowship with an NGO.  We will then be moving to Delhi and West Bengal from where we originally hail.

We need funds for staying and travel while there. We have managed to get our tickets by God’s grace and mercy. Please let us know if any kind brother or sister will be able to support us. We require $500 in all. Any amount would be welcomed and God will bless the giver as He anoints our feet to preach the gospel once again. We were raised for the End Times to do God’s work to reach out to the remnants. I come from a Brahmin background and God has miraculously raised me from my childhood. I was called from an early age but had to break many barriers to grow spiritually and to be standing where I am presently only by His power and mercy. Only through His mercy I continue each day in my transformed life.

We also rejoice that from March this year we will be having a profit making side of business and a missionary organisation to meet the needs of Christian leaders, orphans, the poor and the needy in the Indian subcontinent. My son Mark and I have been led in partnership for this work and are in prayers, preparation and transformation for this work. All glory goes to Him and Him alone and we are awestruck that He chooses such ordinary vessels such as us to do this work.  This is happening while He continues to perfect us.

As you all know God’s work also involves some level of sacrifice and through His grace and mercy I have been able to crucify myself to a large extent to hear His calling on my life and act in obedience. I have been in active prayer semi fasting and of course without work in preparation of this journey.  I did this through the gift of Faith inherited from Him and believe that God will not let me go without food and shelter while I go to do His work.

There is less than one week to make this donation.

Lastly we believe God is going to use us and others across the globe in unique ways to be effective for expanding His Kingdom. He is raising new servants to serve Him taught in His School through His Word and His Spiritl. While we are in the End Times ( at any time and hour the time will be up) we have a desire to continue to help the poor the needy the sick and the hopeless in an appropriate way – in ways that will bring back dignity into their lives.  We are called to transform them and empower them.

We are committed to work hard for Him through the Intensified Spirit of the Lord within us as given by His good pleasure.  We want to do this humbly and diligently.

Would you want to participate in the End Time drama with us as it continues to unfold?  Will you be wanting to take our friendship through Facebook at the next level?  We are surprised when we depend on God and God alone.

We are accepting through Paypal account at christinemukherjee@gmail.com – my official name is Chhanda Mukherjee and DOB 27/08/1956 We believe our work will be quite effective as we are specially raised and prepared for His work in the End Times.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit Matth28:19
